Darragh McCarter wins final stage of Orwell Two Day

 

Having been riding well this year and won the PJ Logan Cup, Darragh McCarter has taken another victory; this time at the Orwell Two Day.

At the end of the 108km stage, the top eight riders were covered by just seven seconds.

There then followed a much bigger gap, of 1:37, to the next man home; Neill Delahaye (Fixx Rouleurs).

And after him the gaps were in minutes rather than seconds. It meant the stage and general classification spoils were shared by the eight men up the road.

Tucked into that group was stage 2 winner Paul Forristal. The Orwell Wheelers man had gone into today's final stage in second place overall.

He was just 29 seconds behind the stage 1 TT winner Michael O'Loughlin of Team Wiggins. O'Loughlin fell ill today and was forced to pull out of the race before the halfway point.

Forristal was last man across the line of the leading eight men today. But that mattered little. He had easily done enough to seal the overall victory.

In the end he ran out the winner by 26 seconds from Cian Sutcliffe (Team Gerard-DHL).

And rounding out the general classification podium was John Hodge of Panduit Carrick Wheelers just 28 seconds off the race win.

Today Darragh McCarter (Donegal Bay CC) just about beat Antoine Le Corre (UCD CC-FitzCycles.ie) in the sprint to win the stage.

A photo finish was required to separate them; only the width of a tyre between them.

John Hodge was 3rd on the stage followed by Cian Keogh (Sports Room Racing) and Cian May (Lucan Cycling Road Club).

Then came Conor Gallagher (NRPT-Chill Insurance), Sutcliffe and Forristal.
