Daniel Stewart didn’t have to wait too long last year to take his first win of the season, and he has put in a repeat performance in the early stages of the new campaign by coming home for a great win in the main event at the John Moore Memorial in Carryduff, Co Down, today.

The 18-year-old last year took the Annaclone GP in March in a sprint ahead of his uncle Brian Stewart (Phoenix).

Since then, he has gained selection on the Irish national junior team and also enjoyed a period racing in Belgium with fellow junior international Matthew Doyle, not to mention taking bronze in the junior time trial championships last year.

With those milestones under his belt at the junior ranks, the Audi East Antrim teenager has clearly continued to put his head down over the winter and was a very strong winner today in the main event for A1/A2/A3 riders.

Stewart was in the thick of the action in the closing stages and approaching the finish had gone clear, with team mate Gary Cranston and strong Errigal CC rider Conor McIlwaine also to the fore.

However, in the closing stages Stewart kept his cool, charging up the incline at the finish in the rain to take a clear win ahead off Cranston, with McIlwaine a little further back in third in the race promoted by Castlereagh CC.
