Ireland's Dan Martin has taken his first victory of the 2018 season, ripping it up on the final climb at Criterium du Dauphine.
When the Irish rider pulled the trigger late on the cat 1 climb to the finish at Valmorel nobody could match him.
As a result Martin danced clear to win by four seconds from new race leader Geraint Thomas (Team Sky). Adam Yates was next, the Mitchelton Scott man at 15 seconds.
Marc Soler (Movistar) had attacked with 4km remaining. But just one kilometre further on Martin countered, and that proved to be the race-winning move.
Today’s victory comes as a massive boost for Dan Martin. Since moving to UAE Team Emirates his form has been indifferent.
And though the team performed very poorly in the team time trial in France on Wednesday - finishing third from last – Martin said he had felt good during the stage.
He popped up with a late attack yesterday; going close to winning but having to settle for 2nd place. And now today he attacked from further out and was in the class of his own.
More to follow.
