Dan Martin through Algarve opener ahead of tough climbing stage

Fabio Jakobsen takes the stage victory in Portugal and with it the first race leader's jersey of the five-stage Volta ao Algarve featuring Irish riders Dan Martin and Ryan Mullen

Dan Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) has finished in the bunch on stage 1 at the Volta ao Algarve ahead of the first climbing stage, of two, tomorrow.

The 195.6km opener from Portimão to Lagos today came down to a bunch sprint after the near stage-long breakaway was caught.

That led the way for the sprinters' teams to take over at the front, with Deceuninck-QuickStep proving dominant in that regard.

The Belgian WorldTour team's 23-year-old sprinter Fabio Jakobsen made no mistake in the final dash to the line.

The Dutch national champion looked like he would be challenged all the way by Elia Viviani (Cofidis), though the European champion faded a little and Jakobsen won it well in the end.

Viviani was next to cross the line before Matteo Trentin (CCC Team) rounded out the podium on the day.

Dan Martin finished in 67th place on the same time as the winner while Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo) was in 120th place at 22 seconds.

Tomorrow's stage brings the riders 183.9km from Sagres to Alto da Fóia. It features a lumpy finale with four short sharp climbs and the 7.5km climb to the finish all within the final 35km.
