Dan Martin takes strong result in Italy as Il Lombardia exit nears | Video

Dan Martin placed 6th in Giro dell'Emilia today in what is his last week as a professional cyclist

Dan Martin has taken a very strong result in Italy today,
suggesting he is great shape as he moves towards his final race as a pro
cyclist at next Saturday’s Il Lombardia.

The 35-year-old placed 6th in Giro dell'Emilia (1.Pro), the first of his final series of races in Italy in his last week as a pro. Israel Start-Up Nation rider Martin is down to ride Tre Valli Varesine on Tuesday before Il Lombardia next Saturday, which he won in 2014.

Today Martin was effectively best of the riders that missed
the winning move on the finishing circuits, with his team mate Michael Woods
also missing out.

That move contained Deceuninck-QuickStep’s João Almeida and Remco Evenepoel as well as Jumbo Visma duo Jonas Vingegaard, and Primož Roglič, Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers), Clement Champoussin (AG2R Citroen) and David Gaudu (Groupama FDJ).

Woods managed to get across to them, though that effort took a lot of out him; something he would play for in the closing stages. On the uphill finish, Roglič was best and won the race by three seconds from Almeida, with Woods 3rd at five seconds.
