Having ridden only last week's National Road Race Championships in Westmeath since breaking his collar bone on the opening stage of the Giro two months ago, Dan Martin was among the strongest in the field on the uphill finish at the Tour of Austria today.
The Garmin Sharp rider came home in 8th place, some 31 seconds down on stage winner and overall leader Peter Kennaugh of Team Sky.
The race fractured on the climb to the finish, with Kennaugh winning by 11 seconds from for Tour of Lombardy winner Oliver Zaugg of Tinkoff-Saxo.
The result for Martin on today's opening stage suggests he is in pretty good shape after his long racing lay-off. And with more climbing to come over the next week, he will likely be right in the mix for overall victory.
Above, new British road champion Kennaugh takes the win today.
