Dan Martin has moved up the general classification, though he lost time on the strongest riders, today on stage 2 at Tour des Alpes Maritimes et du Var.
As was the case yesterday, the early breakaway was caught in time for a fight in the peloton on the final climb, though today the final ramp was a much shorter and steeper test.
Martin's new Israel Start-Up Nation team mate Michael Woods proved the best, by some margin, despite Ineos Grenadiers trying to dominate on the front in the closing stages to set up Jhonatan Narváez for victory.
Woods attacked the finish hard, from almost 400 metres out, and powered his way to the line out of the saddle. Race leader Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) did incredibly well to close Woods down a little as the line approach, but was still two seconds down on the Canadian, with Narváez 3rd on the same time.
And because Woods placed 4th yesterday, just one second behind Mollema, he took the race lead from the Dutchman today by a single second ahead of tomorrow's third and final stage.
Yesterday's finishing times were initially slightly bigger, but were revised after the stage to put just a one second gap between Mollema and a large group just behind him.
Dan Martin placed 14th today at the end of the 169km stage into Fayence; the Irishman among a strung out group of 17 riders all credited with being 13 seconds down on winner Woods.
The result means Martin, who was in the group one second down on Mollema yesterday, moves up four places to 12th overall, some 13 seconds down on new race leader Woods.
Tomorrow's final stage features three cat 1 climbs, but without an uphill finish. The summit of the final climb of the day, the Col de la Madone de Gorbio, is about 25km from the finish of the 136km stage into Blausasc.
Israel Start-Up Nation will try to defend the yellow jersey for Woods, with Martin likely to be called into team duties, especially as Mollema is just one second down overall.
