Primoz Roglic took a very impressive stage 10 win at La Vuelta today with Dan Martin, once again, not putting a foot wrong on a finish where some of the general classification men lost time.
With the stage concluding on a 1.5km climb, gaps appeared at the head of the field as Roglic (Jumbo Visma) burst forward, proving by far the strongest, to take his third stage win of the race.
However, while the bunch exploded in his wake, Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) was clearly live to the threat of losing vital seconds and placed himself perfectly for the finish.
He crossed the line in 7th place and, crucially, was on the same time as his general classification rival Roglic, with only the first eight riders being credited with that time.
Sprinter Jasper Philipsen (UAE-Team Emirates) was 9th and was three seconds down on Roglic, with race leader Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) in 14th place and so ceding three seconds to both Roglic and Martin.
Roglic took the victory today ahead of Felix Großschartner (Bora-hansgrohe) and Andrea Bagioli, Deceuninck-QuickStep's 21-year-old Italian who packs a fast sprint and has performed well in the past on uphill finishes.
Bagioli's Irish team mate Sam Bennett was among the fancied men today as he has proven very adept at uphill finishes, though the sheer pace at the end of the stage today saw the general classification shine.
Bennett appeared to be suffering from about 50km out and was tailed off the back of the bunch just inside the final 30km; the stage 4 winner saying yesterday that he was beginning to feel a bit tired.

Hopefully Bennett can bounce back and take another victory on this race, especially following his disappointment of yesterday when he was first across the line but was relegated for shouldering.
The stage result today means Roglic has now drawn level on time with Carapaz and has taken the race lead from him. Those two are on the same time some 25 seconds up on Dan Martin who is 3rd.
Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) is 4th overall and having been caught out at the finish today, where he lost 10 seconds to Roglic and Martin, he is now 51 seconds down overall.
Enric Mas (Movistar) was among the riders who lost 3 seconds to Roglic and Martin today and remains 5th overall, now 1:54 down.
