Dan Martin makes key splits in Paris-Nice classification battle

Dan Martin was attentive in the final of stage 5 at Paris-Nice and avoided the late losses suffered by other riders. It was an undulating day in the saddle that saw the field split.

Dan Martin has made some key splits on stage 5 of Paris-Nice and avoided losing time.

The Irish rider, with UAE Team Emirates, was one of just 40 riders to finish in the yellow jersey group today.

Jerome Cousin (Direct Energie) took the stage win ahead of Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin).

They survived from the early escape. Cousin would prevail in a nail biting game of cat and mouse in the closing stages.

In the end the leading pair were just four seconds ahead of the yellow jersey group of Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana).

Dan Martin was also in that group; taking 38th on the day. Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) was a little further back; finishing 65th some 26 seconds down.
