Dan Martin’s Garmin-Sharp journey through the vineyards in the rain to a lowly 16th in the team time trial
Dan Martin’s Garmin-Sharp squad has been one of the best at the team time trial discipline during different periods in recent years, but on the opening stage of the Tirreno–Adriatico in Italy today that pedigree was not in evidence.
The US-based outfit could manage only 16th of the 22 teams in the field, relinquishing 57 seconds to winners Omega Pharma-Quickstep in the 16.9km test in wet conditions.
It means Martin has already lost a not insignificant amount of time to some of the best riders in the world including Alberto Contador (Saxo-Tinkoff), Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quickstep), Vincenzo Nibali (Cannondale), Cadel Evans (BMC) and others.
Mark Cavendish crossed the line first rider in the winning team today and so assumes the leader’s jersey for tomorrow’s opening road stage; a 232km run from San Vincenzo to Indicatore.
The field is of considerably better quality than that taking part in Paris-Nice, and with a number of mountainous stages over the next week, Martin should have plenty of opportunity to stretch his legs if his form allows after an illness-hit start to the season.
