Dan Martin among top guns as Dauphiné explodes into life

Jakob Fuglsang, far right, takes stage victor from Chris Froome and Richie Porte at the end of stage 6 at Criterium du Dauphiné.

Dan Martin in mix, Criterium Dauphiné blows

Dan Martin came to the fore at the Criterium du Dauphiné on today’s stage 6 as the race blew to pieces.

The Irishman finished in 6th place and in the second group on the road. That ride sees the QuickStep man jumped into 7th place.

He is 2:14 down on new stage leader Richie Porte. And with two summit finishes to come tomorrow and Sunday Dan Martin may well nudge higher in the standings.

Today the riders faced the Mont du Chat; a savage climb followed a 15km descent into the finish at Villars-les-Dombes after 145.5km.

Martin would be distanced on the climb by the top men on the day.

Astana duo Jakob Fuglsang and Fabio Aru surged ahead on the ascent and they were chased by Froome and Porte.

Martin was the next man on the road for a long time.  However, when the four up front formed a group doing down the descent, Dan Martin could not get across and was absorbed by the chasing group.

Fuglsang would take the sprint to win from Port and Froome.

Some 50 seconds later Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) would lead home the small chase group  for 5th with Dan Martin just behind in 6th.

Tomorrow’s stage is summit finish on Alpe d’Huez. There is another summit finish on Sunday’s savage 115km stage to Plateau de Solaison.

Porte took the yellow jersey from Thomas de Gendt (Lotto Soudal), who had held it since his solo win on stage 1.

The new race leader would get invaluable help from team mate Nicolas Roche. And when he had his job done he rode into the finish in 39th place and 6:31 down.
