Dan Martin bows out quietly at Japan Cup after best ever season as professional

Dan Martin was well wrapped up against the elements in Japan yesterday but was not in the reckoning in the finale despite a good recent showing in Beijing and claiming victory and a 2nd place in the Japan Cup in the past couple of seasons.

Dan Martin may have been fancied to finish the season on a high note with a possible victory in the Japan Cup yesterday, Sunday, after coming 2nd last year and winning the event two years ago.

However, while the Irishman showed very good form in taking 2nd overall in the Tour of Beijing which ended last week, his ride in Japan was lack lustre on what was a wet and tough day for the riders during which only 39 finished.

The Garmin-Sharp climbing specialist was not in the reckoning in the finale when a decisive group that went clear on the last passage of the hilly circuit in Utsunomiya.
