Conor Murnane of UCD Cycling Club is on top of the Cycling Ireland A1 rankings just over two months into the season, though the race at the top of the leader board is a tight one so far this year.
The 24-year-old leads the way on 97 points in the up to date latest rankings to last Thursday, May 5th. Luke Smith (Moynalty CC) is next on 91 points with Lindsay Watson (Powerhouse Sport) in 3rd position on 89 points.
Then comes the top ranked rider of the last two seasons, Daire Feeley; the All human-VeloRevolution man collecting 85 points so far. After the top four, the gap to the next riders is a little bigger as Gareth O'Neill (Caldwell Cycles) is in 5th place on 61 points.
Rankings leader Murnane has emerged as one of the country's leading riders in recent years and took a notable jump forward last year. While he always had a habit of collecting a few wins each season, the standard of those victories was more substantial last year, including gold at the National Criterium Championships and victories in the Galway Classic and Newcastle West Stage Race, among others.
This year he has been in similar form and hit top stride over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan when he won stage 2. He has also take a collection of 2nd places this year, including at: the Des Hanlon Memorial, Mick Lally Memorial, two stages at Rás Mhaigh Eo and Life Credit Union Newbridge GP.
The rider who sits 2nd in the rankings, Luke Smith, also has one win under his belt so far this year, at the Starsky CC St Patrick's Day Race in Kilbride. He was also 2nd in the Waller Cup and Coombes-Connor Memorial, 3rd in the Killinchy GP, 4th in the Annaclone GP and 5th in the Des Hanlon.
Lindsay Watson, who sits 3rd in the rankings has been a byword for consistency in the opening couple of months of the season and has been a constant in or around the podium in many events. Like rankings leader Murnane, Watson hit he afterburners at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan. He claimed the opening stage from a breakaway and then retained the yellow jersey all the way through the race for the biggest win his career to date.
