James Curry has wrapped up overall victory in Rás Dun na nGall after winning the final stage up Glengesh Pass this afternoon.
The Cycle Sierra Nevada rider started in the yellow jersey this morning and proved his class with a really excellent performance, crossing the line six seconds clear of runner-up Ben Walshe (NRPT.ie) with Aaron Kearney (Errigal CC) a further two seconds back.
Curry won by 47 seconds overall with yesterday’s stage winner Kevin McKinney (Velo Café Magasin) in second while Geoffrey Robinson (Bray Wheelers) was a further second back in third.
Double stage winner Adam Stenson (Bikeworx Celbridge) tried to take back the yellow jersey he lost yesterday afternoon by attacking with 30 kilometres to go.
At that point he was in the front group some three minutes behind the break and though he bridged, he suffered cruel luck with a puncture at exactly the worst possible time as he was catching his breath.
Credit to him for getting back onto the leaders and challenging for the stage but Curry was in awesome form and scorched past everyone inside 200 metres to go to capture the biggest win of his career.
We will have more on this later.
