Michael Brady (Covey Wheelers) was today’s victor in the second round of the Connacht Road Race League, with the Westport rider proving quickest in the sprint to the line in Ballinrobe.
Brady, fresh from last weekend’s Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, appeared to show no ill-effects from the exertions of that race when he just edged out Peter Tuohy from Castlebar CC in the final few metres today.
Third over the line was another Covey Wheelers rider, Padraic Conway.
The pan-flat 50 mile circuit proved difficult for any moves to stick and after a few early attempts by those who would eventually fill the podium it was clear that a sprint finish was the likely outcome.
Upwards of 70 riders took to the start-line, with U16’s up to senior A1’s included in the handicapped event.
Approaching the finish it was Tuohy who made the most significant bid for glory when he attacked out of the bunch and looked like he would hold on until the finish. However, he was just edged out by Brady with a half bike length separating them at the finish.
Meanwhile, the Castlebar CC team for the An Post Rás next month is provisionally: David Brennan, Belgium-based Patrick Clarke, Ciaran Clarke, Bernard Twomey and Chris Coyle.
The team will continue its preparations for the race with a visit to the DMG Visit Nenagh Classic next weekend.
Coyle raced in the Tour of Malta recently and was due to be joined at that race by Brennan, who fell ill in the lead-up to it and was forced out.Brennan was also unfit to start the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan last weekend as a result of that lingering illness, a race he finished 11th overall in last year. The Clarke brothers have been riding well of late with Ciarán finishing a very solid 21st in Rás Mumhan.
