Cormac Mcgeough has gotten his 2020 season off to a solid start at Le Tour de Langkawi (2.Pro).
Mcgeough switched from Irish squad EvoPro Racing to US outfit Wildlife Generation Pro Cycling in the off season.
The 23-year-old US-based Irish rider was making his debut
for his new team at Le Tour de Langkawi and went on the attack on the penultimate
stage yesterday.
While the group built up an impressive gap and Mcgeough was last man standing of the escapees, they were all eventually reeled in and stage was won by Mohd Harrif Saleh (Terengganu Inc) in a bunch sprint.

“Langkawi was such a great way to start the season. I don’t
think I have ever gone this hard in February,” Mcgeough told stickybottle.
“Most days were sprint finishes, and even though we didn’t
quite have a pure sprinter we tried our best leading out and going for results.
We managed two 6th places in the sprints.”
Mcgeough added he really enjoyed going on the attack on
stage 7 on Thursday, saying it was a great experience.
“We had five minutes at one point with only 65km to go, with
the gap still going upwards,” he said of the 130km stage to Alor
Setar.
“Nobody in the break was a GC threat so the overall leader’s
team was happy to let it go. It took five different teams mounting the chase to
bring us back.
“Things weren’t looking great with about 15km to go so I
attacked the group and only brought one with me.
“A few kilometres later I attacked him and went off on my own. I gave it everything but the chase caught me with 3km to go to make it a sprint finish.”

The hardest stage, which tackled the brutal climb of Genting Highlands, saw Mcgeough finish in a solid 39th place some 10:43 behind winner Kevin Rivera (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec).
The eight-stage event was won overall by 30-year-old
Italian Danilo Celano (Team Sapura
Cycling) with
Mcgeough in 56th of the 107 finishers.
