Conor Prendergast of Galway Bay CC won the Castlebar Grand Prix in Co Mayo yesterday with a daring long-range attack that saw him ride to victory solo from the 25km maker.
Prendergast started the main event with the A3 group but before the A1s or A2s for across, the Galway rider attacked and rode clear alone. He then stayed away to the finish for a brilliant win.
While Matthew Devins of Dan Morrissey-Primór by Pissei took off from the bunch on his own in pursuit of the lone leader, he had to be content with 2nd on the day. Sean Lehehan (Spellman-Dublin Port) won the sprint for 3rd, from a four-man chasing group.
from Karl Benson (Castlebar CC) was 4th, Timothy O'Regan (All-Human Velo Revolution) 5th and Derek Joyce (Galway Bay CC) 6th, with Ross McGuinness (Challenge CC) winning the bunch sprint for 6th.
In the A4 race, Steven Edmundson (Westport Covey Wheelers) proved best in the sprint from a 12-rider group with Greg Baxter (Westport Covey Wheelers) 2nd and John Guilfoyle (Annagh Wheelers) in 3rd.
