Conor Murphy (Caldwell Cycles) has taken his first national junior title after winning the U18 men’s crown at the National Cyclocross Championships today, just weeks after making history in becoming the first Irish rider to ever take a top 10 in a UCI-ranked cyclocross race.

While he came up against another classy rider in last year’s runner-up, Joseph Mullen (Zappi Racing Team), it was young Murphy who powered to the title in very cold conditions in Limerick this morning.

His winning margin, of very close to one minute after 42 minutes of racing, was impressive considering the very strong riders chasing him through the five-lap race.

Mullen, who has really impressed on both mud and road over the last 12+ months, had to be content with 2nd place again today, a year after he was also runner-up behind Liam O’Brien, then of Fermoy CC and now with Lidl Trek Development.

Murphy took the win by 50 seconds, with then a bigger gap back to the bronze medal winner, Michael Collins of Newcastle West CC, who was 2:41 down on the winner.

More to come.
