Connor McConvey is flying in Thailand; the change from An Post to Synergy Baku appears to be suiting him
By Graham Healy
Connor McConvey (Synergy Baku Cycling Project) has had an excellent start to the UCI 2.2-ranked Tour of Thailand. After three stages, he lies in 7th place overall.
McConvey, who finished in 26th place overall in the Tour de Langkawi last month, started the race well as he managed to get into the lead group of 16 riders that finished over a minute clear of the bunch on the opening stage in Suphan Buri, north of Bangkok.
At the finish, he helped his team mate Rico Rogers take the stage win and first leaders jersey of the race.
On the 112-kilometre second stage, from Hua Hin to Prachuap Khiri Khan, the Synergy Baku team were unable to hold onto Rogers’ leaders jersey, as Muhd Shaiful Anuar Aziz took over at the top of GC. McConvey came in 53 seconds behind, to move to 7th place overall. Today’s stage finished in a bunch finish, and McConvey retained his position overall. He is the best-placed of his team on GC.
Following a difficult season last year, 24 year-old McConvey seems to have rediscovered his form, which saw him finish in 4th place overall in the Rás in 2010. The move to the Azerbaijani team seems to have worked well for the Belfast man, and he can expect further opportunities for good results over the coming months.
The team are expected to take part in the Tour de Beauce in Canada and the An Post Rás in addition to their home stage race, the Azerbaijan International Cycling Tour.
Despite losing the yellow jersey on the second stage in Thailand, Synergy Baku holds the points jersey with Rico Rogers after he was 4th today, while Elchin Aasdov is the leader of the interim sprints competition.
The team – which involves Irishmen David McQuaid and David McCann at the helm – also won a stage in last month’s Tour of Taiwan and held the yellow jersey for a period in what has been a very strong start on the Asian circuit in their first season in existence.
