Con Doherty European Triathlon Cup gold Malmö: Con Doherty has converted double silver medals at the European Triathlon Cup to gold; claiming 1st place in Malmö, Sweden, yesterday.
The Mayo athlete, who has ridden bike races on the
domestic scene as part of his training, had a bit of ground to make up coming
out of the water.
But at that point he was just getting going and went on
to prove fastest over both the bike and run legs.
At the end of 55 minutes of action in the sprint distance
event, Con Doherty saw off Vasco Vilaca of Portugal by just four seconds.
And in 3rd place was Swedish athlete Gabriel Sandör, taking the bronze in front of the home crowd just nine seconds down on Doherty.
Doherty’s time of 9:55 in the swim was significantly
slower than all of other triathletes in the final top ten.
Indeed, he gave away 32 seconds to eventual runner-up
Vilaca. But once the Irishman got out of the first transition and onto the bike
he came into his own.
His bike time of 28:49 was the fast of the 70-strong
field though he still had a fight on his hands for gold, with the title not
settled until the very end.
And that end of course came on the run when Doherty
clocked a time of 14:20, the fastest of the field.
He was 2nd in this event in Malmö last year and the year
before; his victory yesterday coming as he carried the tag of pre-race
favourite into the event.
