You had to feel very sorry for him on the day, but he pulled himself together and (finally!) got a rear wheel and got back into the fight at the World Champs. And now he's been crowned Colombian champion

Colombia’s German Dario Gomez was seen breaking down in tears during the junior race at the 2019 World Road Championships in Yorkshire after being left stranded by the roadside.

Images of him upset by the roadside, and getting no assistance, went viral at the time. But now he is really on his way as he has just won the Colombian U23 road race title; the 20-year-old taking a solo victory in the national title race in Risaralda yesterday.

As an 18-year-old at a sodden Worlds in Yorkshire he was left holding his wheel up in the air as car after car in the cavalcade passed him. And when the last of the team vehicles following what remained of the bunch drove by him without stopping, he knew his chances were over and broke down.

The TV cameras stopped and stayed on him, which seemed to upset him even more. He eventually got up from the side of the road and walked up the road; his bike in one hand and his wheel in the other.

The images of his sobbing went viral on social media, though he did finish that day, in 60th. He was the reigning Pan American junior TT champion at the time and was 15th in the Worlds TT in Yorkshire.
