Murphy demolishes final time trial in Connacht for double stage victory and overall win

There have already been three stage races in Connacht this year; Rás Mhaigh Eo won by Lucan's Ronan Killeen three weeks ago, the Tour of Connacht A1-A2-A3 race won by Dylan O'Brien the weekend before last and the A4 edition of the same race which concluded yesterday with a win by Ciaran Murphy (Photo: Paweł Sadowski of www.shutterstills.com)

Having won the opening stage of the A4 Tour of Connacht two-day in a bunch sprint on Saturday, Galway Bay CC's Ciaran Murphy went on to claim the final time trial stage yesterday afternoon and with it the overall title.

Murphy took the leader's jersey into the stage 2 road race yesterday morning, which again finished in a bunch sprint.

This time the stage honours went to Aidan Kelly of the Bikeworx team.

Janis Blinous of Western Lakes was third over the line and having come home in 4th place on Saturday's opening stage he assumed the leader's jersey going into yesterday's final TT leg.

However, because both road stages ended in sprints from large groups, some 20 riders went into the afternoon test equal on time with the leader.

And of those it was Murphy who was quickest in the 8km test, coming home the clear winner by 35 seconds from Shane Gilligan (Western Lakes) and Brendan Ryder (Ballina CC) who were tied on time.

But because Gilligan was not among the 20 riders equal on time going into the time trial, a place on the final podium eluded him.

Instead, Murphy took the overall victory by 35 seconds from Ryder, with Bernard Barrett of Ballina CC rounding out the podium, some 1:02 off the yellow; his 4th place in the time trial by the same margin enough to secure for him that podium finish.
