Ciaran Campbell wins again; edges out evergreen Ciaran McKenna in Dunsany GP

Ciaran Campbell of Drogheda Wheelers has continued his winning streak, taking his third victory in as many weeks when he was quickest in the bunch sprint at the end of the Dunsany GP main event in Co Meath today.

Campbell had taken his opening win of the year the Waller Cup in Bohermeen two weeks ago and was the winner again at the Frank O’Rourke Memorial in Co Wexford last Sunday.

Today the A3-Junior race was marked by some very fast and aggressive riding, with the 85-strong field averaging 41kph. While a number of groups went clear they were all eventually reeled in and as the last escape was caught just 2km from the finish, it was clear the Drogheda Wheelers-promoted race would be decided in a bunch sprint.

In the 300 metres from the last corner to the finish line, it was junior rider Campbell who proved fastest on the incline all the way to the chequered flag. Veteran Ciaran McKenna (Emerald CC) showed he is still well able to move by taking second, with Jonathan Gormley from Emyvale rounding out the podium.

In the A4 race, 61 riders signed on for the 51km event, with the action again characterised by some aggressive riding. However, the escapes were closed down and after that regrouping it was David Halpin (Orwell Wheelers) who got the verdict ahead of Andrew McGuinness (Navan Road Club) and David Farrell (Longford CC).
