Marcus Christie has set a new Irish national record for the 50-mile time-trial after shattering his own three-year old record on Wednesday night.
Using a borrowed bike the ASEA-Wheelworx man clocked a time of 1:35:32, besting his previous time of 1:40:11.
Christie only decided to do the event at the last-minute because he saw Eileen Burns (Ballymena RC) had went to the trouble of bringing a commissaire to officiate her own effort against the clock.
And the former An Post Chain Reaction rider even admitted to training hard on Wednesday, the day before the event.
“I’m absolutely buzzing,” he said. It was just a half decent night and I knew I could break my old record.
“I had planned to just use it as training so I did a hard day yesterday, but when I saw Eileen had brought a commissaire I went all out to break my previous time.”
Conditions on the night were favourable, little wind but nothing that really troubled him. It was also dry which allowed him to really push on any technical sections or corners.
Also in action last night was Eileen Burns of the host club who also set a new national 50-mile record.
We will have a word with her very soon.
