Charlie Prendergast has taken victory in the John Holian Cup in Co Mayo after breaking clear late in the contest with Eoghan McArdle Ruane.
In the two-up sprint to the line Castlebar CC’s
Prendergast, a prolific winner this year, squeezed out Galway Bay CC’s Ruane.
In the scrap for 3rd place just behind the winner and
runner-up Sean O’Malley was best for promoting club Western Lakes CC.
Run off in a handicapped format over 55km out of the
village of Cross, the racing was fast with the scratch group only mopping up
the last of those ahead in the final 5km.
When the catch was made the eventual winner and runner-up
got off the front, eking out a lead that proved the winner of the race.
It was Prendergast’s sixth win of the year. He has also
won the recent Newbridge GP as well as the Deanside Cup and Waller Cup.
Earlier in the season he also won a stage and the overall
at Rás Mhaigheo and has taken six other
podium placings aside from his victories.
After the top three in Cross this evening, Padraig Marrey
was 4th in the colours of Western Lakes ahead of Prendergast’s Castlebar team
mates David Brody and David Walsh.
