Charlie Prendergast wins Deenside Cup main event

Having been on the podium four times already this season and taken a recent victory, Charlie Prendergast has won his second race of the season.

The Castlebar CC man was best of the breakaway at the end of the Deenside Cup in Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny.

The four-lap race was characterised by an indecisive opening phase. However, the action proper began before the climb on the opening lap.

It was Luke Smith (Viner-Caremark-Pactimo) and Tim O’Regan of Killarney CC who first got clear. They escaped before the climb, with Smith taking the prime before they were caught.

And at the beginning of the second lap, after the descent to the finish, a number of riders broke clear; including eventual winner Prendergast.

Also in that move was O’Regan, Smith, Aaron Doherty (NRPT-Chill Insurance) and Conor Murnane (UCD-FitzCycles.ie).

Greg Swinand (Viner-Caremark-Pactimo) also made the cut, as did Adam Greally (St Tiernans CC), JB Murphy (Kilcullen Murphy Surveys), Chris Reilly (Bohermeen CC) and Ryan Sherlock (Unattached).

With plenty of power in there, they were never caught. However, Mark Dowling (Unattached) and Conn McDunphy (Holdsworth Pro Cycling) were chasing just behind.

And the fact that duo was breathing down the breakaway’s neck kept them honest up front.

While there was a volley of attacks out of the escape as the finish neared on the last lap, nothing stuck.

It came down to a sprint from the breakaway, with Prendergast leading it out and taking victory from Doherty and Smith.
