Charlie Prendergast has taken victory in the inaugural Challenge GP in Bullaun, Co Galway, in very wet conditions.
The Castlebar Cycling Club man was best in a sprint from Liam Curley (Strata 3-VeloRevolution) after four laps on a fast rolling 30.7km circuit starting and finishing Bullaun Co Galway.
It was Prendergast’s eighth win of the year. He has also
won the recent Paddy Flanagan, John Holian Cup, Newbridge GP, Deanside Cup and
Waller Cup.
Earlier in the season he won a stage and the overall at Rás Mhaigheo and has taken six other podium placings aside from his victories.
While the rain came down in buckets from the start it
didn’t deter the riders, with large fields in each race.
In the main event what would prove to be the winning five-man breakaway went away early; Prendergast present with Curley and Conor McKenna (UCD CC).

Though that group was only halfway through the opening
lap when it rode away, the strongest of them remained clear to the finish.
Punctures cost two of the men up front their places in
the group and eventually it came down to just Curley and Prendergast.
They combined to share the workload until they got to the
finish where a two-man sprint settled it; Prendergast winning from his
breakaway companion.
Best of the rest
was Darragh McCarter (Donegal
Bay CC) who took 3rd from Eoghan
McArdle Ruane (Galway Bay CC) and Stephen Murphy (Black Rose Racing).
In the A3-Junior
race Feidhlim Dignan and Ruaidhri
Geraghty took a Galway Bay CC 1-2, with Conor Farrell (Lakeside CC) in 3rd.
The A4 contest
was won by Gearoid Howard (Burren
CC) from Barry Kivlehan (Ballina CC) and Ken Ralph (Burren
CC).
