Clarke takes Charleville yellow but Barrett, Devins take fight to him

Niall Clarke has taken the final yellow jersey from the A2-A3 Charleville Two Day but he was pushed all the way by two very strong teenagers.

Sean Barrett of O'Leary Stone Kanturk took the stage after pulling clear with Matthew Devins (Yeats Country CC) and were never seen again.

While Barrett took the stage victory, by two seconds from Devins, there was also the final classification to settle.

Yellow jersey Clarke (Newry Wheelers) had won the opening road stage on Saturday and the Sunday morning stage 2 TT to take the race lead into yesterday's final stage.

Crucially, junior international Devins started that final stage in 3rd place overall just 48 seconds down.

And when he got clear with Barrett late on yesterday's stage, their gap pulled out to over 50 seconds.

Clarke got into trouble on a late climb and slipped off the back of a group he was in, though he was far from finished and got back on.

By the time he had done so Barrett and Devins were up the road; the former with stage win in mind and the latter looking for yellow.

There was nothing left for Clarke to do but give his all in the chase all the way to the line.

However, when he got a time check with just 4km remaining, the gap to the two leaders was 50 seconds.

Had it stayed that way or pulled out any more, Devins would have taken the yellow jersey from Clarke.

However, on the line the gap between stage winner Barrett and the chase group Clarke was in was 44 seconds.

And because Devins lost two seconds to Barrett at the finish, he was 42 seconds clear of Clarke.

It meant while the two teenagers who had powered up the road really brought the fight to Clarke, he just about held them off; taking the overall win by six seconds from Devins.

And thanks to the time he gained in winning the final stage, Barrett ended the race 3rd overall, some 40 seconds down on winner Clarke.
