Having been treated to a remarkable display by new World Championships gold and silver medallist Martyn Irvine on Thursday, Caroline Ryan yesterday very nearly made it a hat trick of medals for Ireland.
The Garda CC and Team Ireland rider faded in the dying metres of the 10km scratch world title race on the velodrome in Minsk, Belarus, at a time when she looked to be in with a fantastic chance of taking the bronze.
Earlier, it looked like the former international rower would repeat the performance of Irvine in his scratch race, when she attacked on her own with roughly 12 laps to go.
Seeing the danger, last year’s world champion Pawlowska (Poland) and Ryan’s training partner Arreola Navarro (Mexico) jumped across to the Irish woman.
In the closing laps this trio powered together towards the finish line, before Pawlowska attacked again. With 100m to go the chasing bunch, which as closing the gap, passed Ryan, putting her in 7th place at the finish.
It was however, a fantastic performance on the world stage to add to her 5th place in the individual pursuit earlier in the week.
Ryan goes again today, this time in the points race where she won her bronze medal in Melbourne last year. And 19-year-old Eoin Mullen was in sprint action this morning. He was 27th in qualifying of the 41-man field with 24 to go through to the next rounds.
We’ll have more on his and Ryan’s performances later.
