Aaron Wade (Cortizo Aluminium Team) and Caoimhe O'Brien (Cyclingteam Belco-Van Eyck) have limbered up for the upcoming U23 European Track Championships in Portugal with victories in the National Omnium Championships.
Wade has been in good form of late, especially in shorter and faster races, and he used that power and speed to good effect on the Sundrive Road velodrome in Dublin; winning the scratch race and tempo race, the opening two events of four that make up the omnium.
In the third event, the elimination race, Wade had to be content with 3rd as top sprinter Harvey Barnes (East Tyrone CC) took the honours ahead of Cian Keogh, now riding for US-based Continental team Skyline.
However, the leader and eventual winner, Wade, sealed the title with another win in the points race to conclude the contest. His points tally of 163, across the four races, saw him take the title from Keogh, on 123 points, with JB Murphy (Kilcullen Murphy Geospacial) taking bronze with 113 points.

Murphy got the better of Barnes - who specialises in sprint events - in what was a tight contest for bronze. Just four points separated them going into the points race. Murphy, a medal winner at the Europeans at junior and elite level and also at the junior Worlds, gained a lap. That meant he took the bronze by just two points from Barnes.
In the women's event, the O'Brien sisters - Caoimhe and Aoife (Spellman Dublin Port) - went head-to-head and finished with gold and silver. However, Autumn Collins of Longcourt Hotel-NCW, who has recently been track racing in the US and is no stranger to national track titles, put it up to the Westmeath sisters.
Aoife O'Brien, a first-year U23 rider, won the the scratch race ahead of Collins and Caoimhe O'Brien. However, in the next two races, Caoimhe O'Brien asserted herself at the top of the standings. She won the tempo race, ahead of her sister and Collins, and then also won the elimination race; this time from Collins and Keela McHale (Sundrive Track Team).
Caoimhe O'Brien then dominated the points race to seal the gold medal, with a total of 163 points across the four events; from Aoife O'Brien on 149 points, with Collins 3rd on 102 points.
