Caoimhe May and Darren Rafferty power to Irish junior TT titles

Caoimhe May and Darren Rafferty have won the Irish junior TT titles on the opening day of the National Road Championships in Co Wicklow.

May (Orwell Wheelers) topped the podium from Katie Neill of TC Racing and Maria McAllister, also riding for TC Racing.

May went around the 23.41km course, in Brittas, Co Wicklow, in a time of 37:46. That was 20 seconds faster than silver medal winner Neill. McAllister took the bronze 1:27 off the the winner.

In the junior men's race Darren Rafferty (Villeneuve Cycliste) won the title with a time of 42:34 on the 33.79km course.

The Co Tyrone teenager, who recently placed 4th in the TT at the Europeans in Italy and was 11th in the Worlds in Belgium, was the hot favourite going into today's Irish title race.

He ended the event some 2:54 up on Ronan O'Connor of Orwell Wheelers, with Stefan Caulfield-Dreier (Killarney Cycling Club) winning the bronze at 3:36.
