Down Under: Ireland’s Aaron Buggle winds it up with Rapha team mate Kristian House in his slipstream
Aaron Buggle has demonstrated in Australia that he is wintering well, mixing it in the thick of the action at the Mitchelton Bay Classic and nudging into the top 20 in just his third outing as a professional rider.
The Rapha Condor JLT man from Co Meath came home just 16 seconds down in the third and concluding part of the criterium series in Williamstown in the early hours of this morning, Thursday, Irish time.
There were just 25 finishers in a field of 70 as the sweltering temperatures, into the 40sC, took their toll.
The race was won by Mitchell Docker of the Orica GreenEdge WorldTour team, with 18-year-old Caleb Ewan (Bikebug) taking the overall three-part criterium series that began on New Year’s Day.
Buggle’s Rapha team mate and fellow Irishman, Felix English was listed as a non finisher.
Not content with throwing himself around the bunch early in the day, Buggle in the evening kicked off the four-stage Jayco Herald Sun Tour with a 4.8km prologue TT.
Like the earlier criterium, the prologue was held in Williamstown. It meant those riders who took in the crit series in recent days and are also riding the Herald Sun Tour had two races in one day but at least did not have to travel.
With Rapha having taken a large number of riders to Australia for an extended racing and training trip, not all of their charges will ride every race in their schedule while Down Under. It means English will sit out the Herald Sun Tour, which ends on Sunday, having completed the crit series.
