British riders fill podium on Rás stage 1, but Irishmen also gain time | Video

Conor McGoldrick wins the opening stage of Rás Tailteann on a day when over 20 riders got up the road and gained time on the rest of the field

British riders filled the top three on the opening stage of Rás Tailteann today, though there were plenty of Irishman who made the main move of the day - over 20 riders at one point - and gained significant time on the remains of the main field.

At the front of the race, Conor McGoldrick took the bull by the horns, with the Richardsons Trek DAS rider not only winning the stage but riding very aggressively, with the legs to light it up from a long way out.

In the final sprint to the line today into Birr, McGoldrick got the better of Dan Gardener (Embark Spirit BSS) and Joseph Laverick, who is guesting for Irish club Foyle CC this week. Those three pressed ahead of the breakaway in the final phase of the stage today, and though they were very nearly caught before the finish, they managed to hang on and fight it out for victory.

Just seconds behind them, US-based Irish rider Cormac Mcgeough (Good Guys Racing NYC) finished solo for 4th, with Aaron Wade (Team Ireland) best in the sprint from the remains of the breakaway to take 5th place after 154.8km of racing from Navan to Birr.
