British teenager Matt Flynn put in a finishing move into Gorey today that put manners of the rest of the breakaway, kicking hard for home with 750 metres remaining and never looking back.
The 16-year-old from the north of England sailed across the line two arms aloft with an Irish trio of Matt Blayney (North Down), Ciaran Power (Comeragh CC) and Mark Nugent (Waterford RC) two seconds back in his wake.
The top four were part of an eight man group that managed to get clear of the bunch during a period of intense attacking around 20km from the finish in Gorey. They quickly started to work well and with plenty of fire power in the group managed to pull out what would prove to be a race-winning move.

The 16-year-old Flynn is riding the Gorey as part of the Mountivation academy, established by former Cycling Ireland high performance director Phil Leigh after he left his post in Ireland last September.
Stickybottle understands the team stayed in Gorey last night and studied today’s finish closely before driving to Blessington for the start of the stage this morning, a professional approach that clearly reaped dividends.
Efforts to contact Flynn this evening were no successful but hopefully we’ll get to speak to him in coming days.
Ciaran Power, who is making a high profile return to racing after packing the pro ranks in 2008, said he was covering some moves for his team mate Martin Cullinane when he got into a move with around 20kms remaining.
“Immediately a few fellas got across with a bit of firepower and they rode, so it worked out well,” he said.
“I more or less had my money on Mark Nugent in the sprint from the group because he nearly dropped me out training last week. But the young fella jumped us and I hadn’t the legs to answer him. He got his gap and fair play to him he won it.”
Power said while he was as determined to enjoy the weekend as he was to get a result, he believed the race was now wide open.
“If I get up there in the TT and then do a ride that will be brilliant. I am definitely here to have a bit of craic and to enjoy it because that was missing in my last few years of racing. But having said that, it would be great if one of us won it.”
While Flynn holds the lead in both the points and GC, Shane Baker of the host club Usher IRC has the lead in the KOH after he won two of today’s three climbs, being first over the top at Hacketstown and Cranford.
