Ireland’s David McCann (RTS Racing Team) on his way to today’s start
Following the significant splits on yesterday’s stage of the Tour of Qatar, the penultimate stage today (Thursday) was a more controlled affair with Mark Cavendish (Team Sky) galloping home for his second stage win.
Matt Brammeier and his Omega Pharma-Quickstep team succeeded in holding the bunch together to protect the GC lead of Tom Boonen, with a group of 80 arriving at the finish in tact after a breezy stage of 160kms.
Brammeier just got trailed off the back of the main group in the closing kilometre after his work was done, losing 33 seconds.
David McCann reported a comfortable day and finished in the same time as the winner.
“It was a bit windier today; 160km with lots of changes in direction so it could have been carnage,” McCann told stickybottle.
“But Quickstep did a great job of just policing the bunch and it never really kicked off in a big way.”
“Still there were a few splits on some sections but everything came back together each time for another nice 28.5mph stage and Cav again finding his way through the chaos to get another win.”
“I was pretty comfy today myself. But after Pozzato yesterday cursed "this Shit race", it was on the calmer day today that we’d the big road-blocking crash we were all waiting for and he broke his collarbone. Somehow I don't think he will be back at this race.”
Tomorrow’s final stage is a short 120kms in Doha.
