Matt Brammeier wears the blue jersey of points leader at the Tour of Langkawi at the start of today's fifth stage.
Matt Brammeier lost his lead in the points competition at the Tour of Langkawi to Dutchman Thomas Rabou today as a three man escape group stayed clear to contest the finish of stage five in Rembau.
Rabou, a familiar face on the Irish scene through his former team’s participation at Rás Mumhan over the years, went clear with Brad White of Unitedheathcare and Luois Metjes of MTN Qhubeka midway through the 140km stage. They were still over a minute up by the finish.
While White took the stage win ahead of Rabou, the Dutchman had been busy garnering points towards the blue jersey earlier on the stage, winning two intermediate sprints and finishing second in another.
Rabou also crested the two third category climbs of the day at the front of the race to gain 12 points in the king of the mountains competition to move himself up to fifth in that classification.
Although Brammeier didn’t score any points at the finish today and lost the blue jersey to Rabou, he currently has the same points as the Dutchman and will be looking to score a few more on tomorrow’s 200km flat stage along the west coast of Johor to take it back.
Brammeier still wears the red jersey of mountains leader with six days of the 11-day 2.HC ranked tour remaining, holding a one point lead over today’s stage winner White’s teammate Colombian Isaac Bolivar.

Brammeier lends a helping hand to another rider as he adjusts his shoe mid-stage today.

Brammeier allows himself a (small) smile on the podium today; have been on it every day since this race began and putting in a performance that suggests his class will out on the international stage.
