Brammeier bouncing back at Romandie; Martin makes low-key start

Matt Brammeier has posted a very decent prologue ride at the Tour de Romandie today, Tuesday, as he gets his racing comeback underway following a period of illness.

The Omega Pharma-Quickstep rider finished 52nd of the 159-man field in today’s lung-bursting 3.34km test in Lausanne; just 16 seconds down on winner Geraint Thomas (Team Sky).

While Brammeier is capable of going a lot faster and finishing much higher up the results even against such a quality field, he is currently rebuilding his form after being sidelined from the spring classics due to bronchitis.

On the basis of his showing today he appears to be on the road back to some good form.

Ireland’s only other rider in the race, the in-form Dan Martin was further back today. He finished 102nd, some 22 seconds down. However, he is not a TT specialist and the today’s very short test would not have been to the climber’s liking.

He’ll have plenty of opportunity over the next five days to flex his muscles, especially on Saturday’s queen stage; 184km with three cat 1 ascents.

Tomorrow’s stage is a 184.5km run from Morges to Chaux-de-Fonds with two second cat climbs and one third cat.
