Bolger prevails over Maes as Young also wins at Carrick CX

Sam Bolger (Killarney CC) and Grace Young (All human-Velo Revolution) won the men's and women's races in the Carrick Wheelers promotion at Powerstown Park, Clonmel, yesterday.

In the men's 'A Race' it was Richard Maes (All human-VeloRevolution) who made much of the early running, gaining a slender lead over eventual winner Bolger on the opening lap, with Richard Barry (St Finbarr's CC).

However, just as Maes had pulled away from Bolger a little he suffered a punctured and had to battle around the rest of the second lap, losing time as he went. That saw Bolger go into the lead and though Maes put up a good fight to get him back, the Killarney rider took his chance clinically and couldn't be caught.

The victory went to Bolger, who rode a strong and consistent five-lap race, and won by 30 seconds over Maes after 45 minutes of racing. Barry rounded out the podium, just 15 seconds behind Maes.

In the women's race, Young is again looking dominant this season. She got ahead early in the contest and once taking a lead she extended her advantage on each of the three laps.

After 30 minutes of racing she had almost four minutes in hand over Marcia Salvador (TC Racing), who took 2nd place just eight seconds clear of 3rd place Sinead Rock (Midleton CTC).

After Bolger's win in the main event, his Killarney CC team mate Stephen Doherty won the men's 'B Race' by 32 seconds from David O'Flaherty of host club Carrick Wheelers with another of the Carrick men, Dermot Logue, in 3rd a further 10 seconds back.
