Alice Sharpe and Mia Griffin have taken a big result for Ireland at the UCI Nations Cup in Milton, Canada, this evening when they claimed bronze in the Madison.
The Irish women made the podium behind gold medal winners Italy and silver medalists Australia. Griffin and Sharpe did extremely well to come away with a medal in what was a very competitive field.
Italy were represented by five-time European champion and three-time world champion on the track, Chiara Consonni, and world road race champion Elisa Balsamo.
The Australians were represented by BikeExchange-Jayco rider, and two-time elite world champion on the track, Alexandra Manly, along with Chloe Moran, a junior worlds medalist.
Japan - who finished behind the Irish in 4th place - were represented by Yumi Kajihara, who took silver in the omnium at the Olympics last year, and Tsuyaka Uchino, the junior world champion in the points race from 2019.
It is the first such result for the relatively new Madison pairing of Sharpe and Griffin, competing in an event in which Shannon McCurley and Emily Kay represented Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics.
Any success like Sharpe's and Griffin's in the Madison in Canada this evening is crucial for Ireland as qualification in that event is one of the main goals in this Olympic cycle. It would also ensure berths in the omnium at the Games in Paris in 2024.
More to come on Griffin and Sharpe and also a full round-up on the Irish team in Milton.
