Big move on final day turns A4 race on its head at Charleville Two Day

The final day of the A4 race at the Charleville Two Day saw Matteo Manassero of Blarney Cycling Club storm ahead to win the final stage solo by almost two minutes and also claim the final yellow jersey.

He finished some 1:51 clear of an 11-man group with an impressive ride 24 hours after yesterday’s TT and road stage saw him placed 2nd overall starting today's final stage.

In the group behind the winner today, Ronei Rodrigues (Tullamore CTC) took the sprint for 2nd place from David Russell (Upperchurch Drombane CC) and Kieran Hull (Blarney Cycling Club).

At the start of today’s stage the gaps were tight in the GC. Yesterday’s opening road stage ended in a bunch sprint and the afternoon TT stage was just 6.17km, meaning minimal gaps.

Stephen Bourke (Limerick CC) won that test yesterday
afternoon and so he carried the yellow jersey into today’s final stage. He led
by just seven seconds from today’s star of the show, Manassero, with Shaun
Barnicle (Western Lakes CC) 3rd at 13 seconds.

The gap that Manassero won by today meant he ran out a very comfortable winner overall and would have done so even if Bourke had been in the chasing group. As it happens, the yellow jersey lost over 10½ minutes today, meaning he fell right out of contention.

Manassero claimed the overall by 1:57 from Barnicle, with
Russell in 3rd at 2:11, James Tobin (Upperchurch Drombane) 4th
at 2:15 and Frank Escaros-Buechsel (De Ronde Van Cork) in 5th at
2:16.
