The second circuit race, on a split stage, today at the Junior Tour of Wales saw the cream rise to the top with British championships road race and TT medal winner, Sebastian Grindley (Fensham Howes-MAS Design), taking a dominant win.
Over 96km of racing around the Pembrey Motor Racing Circuit, on a day of sodden conditions, Grindley took off on his own in fine style. He won by 1:22 from a three-man chase group, led in by Thomas Mead (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club) from Alistair Gardner (Velo Club Venta).
However, while Grindley romped away with the stage and now has a big lead in the general classification going into tomorrow's finale on Tumble Mountain, the Irish were also strong today. Two Cycling Leinster riders in the first large chasing group on the road, with a Munster man just behind.
That first large chasing group, which numbered less than 20 riders, finished at 1:32, with Josh Callaly and Killian O'Brien both present, placing 13th and 15th on the stage. Willem O'Connor of Munster Tarrant was only 26 seconds further back, in the next group to finish, and took 25th at 1:58.
That means, though O'Brien lost significant time to Grindley today, the Irish teenager also gained time on many of his other general classification rivals. He has now moved up from 4th to 3rd overall, some 2:14 down on Grindley.
The next rider, in 4th place on GC, is Oliver Dawson (Fensham Howes-MAS Design) and he is 1:03 down on O'Brien, meaning the Irish rider now has a great chance of a podium finish in this race as tomorrow's hilly finale should really suit him.
More to come.
