Big bunch gallop settles honours in sodden conditions at Newry stage 1

Robert Kennedy of East Antrim Cycling Club was set to ride today's stage 2 of the men's Newry Three Day in the yellow jersey after he claimed the opening stage last night.

Kennedy was fastest in the big bunch sprint to the line, in very wet conditions, at the end of 58km of racing on the Newry Circuit. He held off runner-up Andrew Headley and Marc Allen; the Ards Cycling Club men who claimed 2nd and 3rd.

Curtis Neill, the Carn Wheelers man who put in a very strong performance in the road race at the National Road Championships in Kanturk last weekend, showed himself again last night and claimed the climbers' jersey, while also finished in the 60-rider bunch sprinting for victory.

The men tackle a 112km road race stage 2 today, Saturday.
