Sam Bennett was left disappointed at the end of one of his final races of the year in Germany on Saturday.
Sam Bennett was left to rue what might have been when he was boxed in during the sprint finish of the 180km Münsterland Giro in Germany on Saturday.
Tom Boonen (Etixx-Quick Step) prevailed in the mass gallop to the line after the early escape was caught on the finishing circuit with around 10km remaining.
Bennett’s Bora-Argon 18 team had put him in the good position approaching the finish.
However, just as he was about to kick for home in a bid for victory he was boxed in and forced to settle for 11th place on the day.
"The race went perfectly until the last hundred meters,” said Bennett’s sport director Steffen Radochla.
“The teamwork was very good and the guys rode exactly as we planned it.
“The whole course of the race has played into our hands and the team was able to prepare optimally the sprint in the finale.
“Shane and Michael brought Sam to the last 500 meters. Unfortunately, Sam got boxed in and he could not even start his sprint.
“This can happen especially in a bunch kick, and it’s also a part of the sport.
"Obviously, Sam is quite disappointed directly after the finish, because the podium was in reach."
