All the attention may have been on the Irish riders competing at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow over the the last week, but Navan Road Club kept things going on the home scene on Saturday, staging the Beechmount Cup in Kilmessan.

With over 70 riders lining out, the handicaps were neutralised on lap two of the three-lap race, with Gareth O'Neill (PB Performance) active off the front and going in what proved to be the winning move on the final lap.

O'Neill forged clear with Conn McDunphy, the Lucan CRC rider who was first reserve for the elite men's road race team for the Worlds. Those two combined to pull out a modest lead on the chasers, which proved enough to settle 1st and 2nd on the day.

O'Neill got they better of McDunphy in the final two-up dash to the line to win from his breakaway companion. McDunphy's Lucan CRC ream mate, Ronan Killeen, proved best of the race; taking 3rd place from Ruairi Byrne (UCD Cycling Club), Mathew Taggert (Rokit SRCT) and Javan Nulty (Unattached Leinster).

Gabrielle Fox (Emyvale CC) took the women's category, Christopher Marshall (Molenspurters Meulebeke) was best junior while Alan Lyne (Lucan CRC) was top A2, Conor Aylmer (St Tiernan's) was leading A3 and Pierce Curtin (Killarney CC) was best A4.
