Shane Baker (Usher IRC) has taken outright victory in the Paddy Flanagan Two-Day in Kildare today, Sunday, after gaining some vital seconds at the end of the fast and furious final criterium stage.
The stage was won Stephen Halpin (Metaltek-SCOTT), after he held off breakaway companions Robin Kelly (Waterford RC) and Daniel Clifford (DID Dunboyne) in the charge to the line.
Overall winner Baker started this afternoon’s final stage in second place on GC, just two seconds down on stage 1 winner and overall leader John Lynch (Murphy Surveys).
The Usher IRC veteran was in the winning breakaway on stage 1 and came home in seventh place just two seconds down on winner Lynch. He was then fourth in the TT this morning on the same time as Lynch; with the test won by Ryan Sherlock (Cycleways).
That time trial result meant all that separated the leading pair going into this afternoon’s concluding criterium was the two seconds Lynch had managed to grab on the opening road stage.
With just 39 seconds covering the top ten riders on GC going into the crit, it was always going to be an aggressive and tactical affair.
However, while Lynch’s team mates did their very best to hold the race together and protect his lead, they could not prevent a breakaway from getting up the road.
Dangerman Baker and a couple of others got clear during some furious attacking on the last lap and managed to finish on the same time as the leaders; which was crucially five seconds ahead of the main bunch containing yellow jersey Lynch.
That last gasp effort by Baker was enough to give him sixth on the stage and the time he needed to leapfrog Lynch and take the outright victory from him. UCD’s Colm Cassidy was also with Baker up the road and he too moved over Lynch to second on the final general classification; the unfortunate Lynch being forced to settle for third overall.
Andrew Meehan (DID Dunboyne) was fourth overall, with Joe Fenlon (Dan Morrissey-Speedy Spokes) in 5th and Sherlock sixth. See full final results below the photos.

With the general classification so tight, there was plenty of action today

Yellow jersey Lynch (far right) watches team mates Mark Kieran and Colm Bracken control the action

Robin Kelly (far right) was active throughout and clearly has good post-Ras legs

Baker (left) rode a smart race and took his chance very well

An early move by Chris Reilly (Bohermeen) and Robin Kelly (Waterford RC)

Kelly and stage winner Halpin are led by Ian Richardson (UCD CC) in the winning move

Mark Kieran rode hard today in defence of his team mate’s yellow jersey, but to no avail

Ryan Sherlock was 6th overall despite being caught out by Saturday’s shortened stage and losing time

Shane O’Donoghue (left) won the support race, while Baker gets his yellow jersey and cup for his outright win in the main event
