Big penalty costs Archie Ryan despite strong Junior Tour of Wales ride

Archie Ryan put in a strong attacking ride on the final stage of the Junior Tour of Wales, claiming 5th on the day.

However, the Irish teenager saw his position in the general classification slip away after a time penalty of three minutes was imposed on the penultimate stage.

He was penalised by three minutes on Sunday having been judged to cross the white line.

And that meant when the final stage was completed today, Monday, rather than being in 8th place in the final standings he was back in 32nd at 7:03.

He went into the final stage on Monday knowing he had been docked the time and that his hopes of a general classification result were over.

However, when he attacked from the bunch with another rider up Tumble Mountain, where he won last year, it was a case of what might have been.

A large breakaway had spent a significant portion of the final stage up the road.

And while Ryan and the rider he was with mopped up most of the remains of the escape, three riders held on to fight it out.

The stage victory went to Isaac Peatfield (Green Jersey RT) by 21 seconds from Samuel Watson (Fensham Howes-MAS Design).
