Archie Ryan (EF Education-EasyPost) may be noted for his climbing prowess, rather than his TT abilities, but the Irish rider has put in a more than solid performance on stage 2 at Tour de Pologne racing against the watch.

And that performance comes as the next chance looms for him and his team mates, who are chasing stage and general classification success at the seven-stage World Tour race.

Today's 15.4km test, an uphill run from Mysłakowice to Karpacz, was won by Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates); the Belgian rider the only one to break the 24-minute marker with 23:59. He beat Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) by nine seconds.

Felix Großschartner (UAE Team Emirates) was 3rd, at 15 seconds, equal on time with 4th placed Oscar Onley of Team dsm-firmenich PostNL. Ryan placed 22nd of a 153-rider field, at 1:08, with Vingegaard taking the race lead.

Rafferty may get another chance, or perhaps team mate Lukas Nerurkar, on the 900m kicker to the finish in Duszniki-Zdrój tomorrow. However, though the ascent averages just over eight per cent, it may play into the hands of riders like stage 1 winner Thibau Nys (Lidl Trek) rather than the pure climbers like Ryan.

In today's TT, Ryan Mullen (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe) was 89th at 3:19 while Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was 115th at 3:56. Bennett's first chance at a sprint is likely to come on Thursday's 195km stage 4 to Prudnik.
