Aqua Blue Sport podium on first Vuelta road stage
Irish ProContinental team Aqua Blue Sport has taken a podium finish on the first road stage of the Vuelta.
British national champion Adam Blythe put in a great turn of speed at the end of the 203km stage from Nimes to Gruissan.
The peloton would fracture when QuickStep put the hammer down with 2km remaining.
And with gaps appearing everywhere it was QuickStep’s Yves Lampaert who attacked solo with 1km remaining.
He just about held off the next group on the road to win, as well as taking the race lead.

Just behind, his team meat Matteo Trentin took 2nd place and Blyth was 3rd.
A 10-man group was credited with the same time as the winner and stole five seconds on the next riders home.
In that group was Vincenzo Nibali; the Astana man making small gains on his rivals already.
Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) would finish in a group some 14 seconds down. He slips from 3rd overall to 5th but keeps his lead in the climbers’ classification.
The only other Irish rider in the race; Conor Dunne (Aqua Blue Sport) would come home in 168th place some 2:32 down.
More to follow.
