One of the favourites for the junior race in Sunday’s National Cyclocross Championships, David Conroy, said anything other than a win will be a failure on his part.
The Scott-Eurocycles-Donnybrook Landscaping rider was runner-up to James Curry (Banbridge CC) 12 months ago but with the latter now overage to defend his title, Conroy looks a strong bet for victory.
“I was disappointed last year not to be closer to the win but that's the way cyclocross - and especially the nationals - go," he said.
“Personally, anything other than a win on Sunday will be considered a failure.
“This race is not the most important or the biggest one I've competed in but it’s definitely a personal goal and besides, who doesn't love a national champs jersey?”
With Cameron McIntyre (NRPT-Magnet.ie) having been ill over the last week, Conroy knows one of his biggest challengers is below his best.
And with just a handful of others to contend, it’s certainly his to lose.
Conroy has gained a huge amount of experience in recent years, riding the MTB and cyclocross scene in the UK, above, and also taking in some major 'cross races in Continental Europe.
“In cyclocross everyone's a threat,” he retorted. “I just have to play it cute but tactically, I'm not sure how the race will play out.
“I haven't seen the course so it’s a matter of waiting until Saturday and getting a feel for it.
“Then it’s just waiting and seeing when my opponents are weak and attacking if I can. That is the key to success in this.”
After Sunday Conroy is hoping to get to the World Cyclocross Championships in coming weeks, though Cycling Ireland has been silent so far on its commitment to sending a team.
“I’m still waiting on them to make up their minds about sending a team to the World Championship's but there are other ‘cross races and I’ll be attending those regardless," Conroy said.
“I’ve had a number of targets for this year and so far I've achieved them all, but the nationals and a ride at the World Championships are still left.
“The best outcome would be representing Ireland at the World Championships wearing the national champions jersey.”
