Olympic triathlete Gavin Noble was in the driving seat in Rás Dhún na nGall heading into the road stage this afternoon, Saturday, after he was best of stage 1’s breakaway men in this morning’s stage 2 short but testing time trial.
The 1.8 mile climbing test at Maghera was won by Andrew Stanley (DUCC). Noble – who is riding the race with Lakelands and is on the road back from injury – finished second. He clocked a time of 7:46.41, some 6.5 seconds slower than winner and talented tester Stanley, who also leads the U23 and mountains classifications.
However, while he may have been forced to play second fiddle in the stage that on paper suited him best – a flat out effort akin to the bike leg of the triathlon – Noble has lifted the yellow jersey off the shoulders of Friday evening’s stage 1 winner Danny Bruton (Standard Life).

Bruton, who has been named on the three-man Irish team for the Junior European Road Race Championships in the Czech Republic, took stage 1 after he and Mark Downey (Cycling Ulster) were quickest of an eight-man breakaway in the sprint to the line in Ardara after 52.1 km.
Bruton and Downey put a gap of two seconds between themselves and the other breakaway riders in the sprint to the line, with the man bunch some 20 seconds further adrift.
As well as Downey and Bruton in the escape, Noble was also there along with Stephen Harkins (Team Madigan), Sean McKenna (UCD CC), Cathal Doyle (Carn Wheelers), Craig McCauley (Cycling Ulster) and Philip Hinch (Brotheren Cycles).
Because Noble was quickest in the morning TT of the six men he was with in that escape and because he put more than two seconds into both Bruton and Downey in the test, he moved into yellow for this afternoon’s road stage.
However, Downey was 4th in this morning’s TT, some 21.65 seconds down on winner Stanley and he remains third on GC, 13 seconds down on Noble. Downey has been going very well, will know the local roads well, won his first race of the season last weekend and this weekend is backed by a strong Cycling Ulster team. He will put it up to the clearly in-form Stanley and the experienced Noble.
In between Noble and Downey on GC is the TT winner Stanley, who is just 11 seconds off yellow. There were big gaps in this morning’s test, with 1 minute covering the top 20.
This morning’s yellow jersey, Danny Bruton was 11th in the TT some 45.6 seconds down and he is now 6th overall at 37 seconds.
This afternoon’s road stage is a 51 mile road race, to be followed by the main event tomorrow; a 61 mile stage finishing atop the feared climb of Glengesh.
